在細胞分裂前，中心體完成自身復制成兩個，然后分別向細胞兩極移動；到中期時，兩個中心體分別移到細胞兩極；到細胞分裂后期、末期，隨細胞的分裂分配到兩個子細胞中。而且，絕大多數動物細胞的中心是細胞核區(qū)，而中心體只是位于細胞核一側的高爾基區(qū)的中央。因此，以“位于……接近于細胞的中心”而命名“中心體”不盡科學，只能說：“中心體通常位于細胞核一側的細胞質中”。中心體的組成及其可視度⑴發(fā)現及組成早在世紀Von Beneden（）觀察細胞有絲分裂過程中發(fā)現中心粒（centrioles）。在光學顯微鏡下可以看到中心粒成對存在。中心粒在細胞分裂時，周圍出現一個比較明亮的區(qū)域稱中心粒團。在中心粒團的外面還有一圈染色較深的區(qū)域，合起來稱為中心球(centroshere）。成對的中心粒及其所附屬的中心球統(tǒng)稱中心體（centrosome）。⑵可視度在電子顯微鏡下可以看到中心粒的超微結構。中心粒為成對的圓筒狀小體，長度大約為.—.微米，直徑為.—. 微米。每個中心粒由條很短的微管組成。
